FIXED: LOG IN AND LOG OUT TIMEOUTS

Posted Saturday Sept 12, 2026 by kumu Kaliko

BACKGROUND

Username and password logins

When a person logs in with a username and password —the "old-fashioned" way— with the "Remember Me" box checked, the login cookie sent to the device is valid for 14 days. It is written with a 14-day expiry, meaning it survives closing and reopening the browser for up to 14 days at which point it expires.

When "Remember Me" is not checked, the token is valid for only 2 days, and the cookie is sent with no expiry at all, which makes it a "single session cookie" that the browser is entitled to throw away the moment it closes.

Magic Link URL logins

The other type of login, the "magic-link" url in an email, is a Remember-Me-off login. Every magic-link session expires exactly 2 days after login. I suspect this has been happening to everyone using a magic link up to this point.

Important Caveat

Some desktop browsers will keep single-session cookies after being closed and reopened; consider yourself lucky if that's the case. On the other hand, mobile browsers such as Android and iOS devices (iPhones, iPads) running Safari do not: swipe the browser away, reboot, or just let iOS evict Safari from memory, and the cookie is gone with the wind.

Also, if you have chosen to run in a "private browser window/tab" or in "incognito mode" or similar, then cookies are temporary and will be tossed out as soon as you close the window or tab. That's the same as logging out.

SOLUTION

I installed some new code that automatically enables "Remember Me" behind the scenes on Magic Link login, so that automatically gives everyone a 14-day login provided that the browser retains its cookies. See the caveat above.

I also modified the login code to stretch these "remembered" logins for students from 14 days to 60 days! That should cover the entire length of an eight-week Session. At least that's what I hope will happen!

NOTES

(1) Each browser (eg., Edge, AOL, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc) on each device (iPad, iPhone, Mac, Android, Windows, etc) needs its own login once, and the fix only applies to logins made after this announcement. So everyone with a current session will still have the cookie expire on its 48-hour clock one more time. The next time you log in, you should be able to stay for 60 days!

(2) The private browser tab/window and incognito mode caveat still applies.

Kamele Lynch

Good afternoon, Kumu Kaliko! I have been struggling to find your posted videos and notes. I have tried logging in on the website online and also on the app. Just wondering if anyone else is struggling with this and how to find the videos and resources.

Kamele Lynch Aloha nui! Please submit a ticket and we'll figure out the fix for you. Make sure you are logged in to the website here and then go to the following link: https://oleloonline.com/support/

Me also, unable to access videos .

Kamele Lynch I have checked inside the syetem and I see that you are an active member of the CH1A community space here in Kaiāulu. It looks like you were last in there 7 hours ago. Can you please confirm that you are now able to see the videos and other resources? Mahalo!

E Kapuamailani Mahi - auē, ua pilikia kekahi mea paha. I koʻu manaʻo, e hiki ana iā ʻoe ke ʻike i kēia manawa. Would you mind going to check again in the CH1B student space? I think everything should be working fine for you now. Please let me know if not! E kala mai, e Kapuamailani.

Aloha, I also am not able to find the videos.

Aloha e Kathy (Loke) Burton - I see that you are an active member of the CH2A group here in Kaiāulu and it looks like you last accessed the group 13 hours ago — right around when you wrote in here. Are you using the "show more" link to open the post? The videos usually fall "below the fold" so you have to click "Show More". Let me know if that helps.
