Aloha kākou! More great news! I have got the video player working better now and all 67 videos uploaded so far this Session should be showing with the new player in all of your browsers. Yipee!
And a double-yipee, because I have also got the downloading functionality working. Lots of code tweaks and overrides have made all of this possible, so I hope it will work on all of your various systems and devices out there. Please let me know in the comments for this post if anything appears broken.
Here is a quick set of notes:
- On iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets: I am not sure what will happen when you press "download". I think it will possibly ask to save the video to a local cache or folder, but it most likely will not automatically name the video with the correct title. It may be something generic like "play_720p.mp4" so you will have to rename the video yourself.
- On all other devices, file naming should work properly and automagically in the Save dialog that pops up.
- I have tested downloads on Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, Firefox Developer Edition, and Zen Browser. All work properly for me. Let's hope it's the same for all you folks.
- The Media > Videos tab should now start auto-populating with videos, but I have not fully tested it yet.
- Let me know if you have any issues.

I have some great news. I have just managed to fix a very vexing bug in the way that PDFs were being saved from within these Kaiāulu student spaces. I hope you will find that now, when you go to save a PDF, the filename will be properly formed and not contain a prepended internal code ID. Let me know if you have any troubles saving the PDFs. (The fix also retroactively fixes all previous PDFs also in case you want to download again.)

BACKGROUND
Username and password logins
When a person logs in with a username and password —the "old-fashioned" way— with the "Remember Me" box checked, the login cookie sent to the device is valid for 14 days. It is written with a 14-day expiry, meaning it survives closing and reopening the browser for up to 14 days at which point it expires.
When "Remember Me" is not checked, the token is valid for only 2 days, and the cookie is sent with no expiry at all, which makes it a "single session cookie" that the browser is entitled to throw away the moment it closes.
Magic Link URL logins
The other type of login, the "magic-link" url in an email, is a Remember-Me-off login. Every magic-link session expires exactly 2 days after login. I suspect this has been happening to everyone using a magic link up to this point.
Important Caveat
Some desktop browsers will keep single-session cookies after being closed and reopened; consider yourself lucky if that's the case. On the other hand, mobile browsers such as Android and iOS devices (iPhones, iPads) running Safari do not: swipe the browser away, reboot, or just let iOS evict Safari from memory, and the cookie is gone with the wind.
Also, if you have chosen to run in a "private browser window/tab" or in "incognito mode" or similar, then cookies are temporary and will be tossed out as soon as you close the window or tab. That's the same as logging out.
SOLUTION
I installed some new code that automatically enables "Remember Me" behind the scenes on Magic Link login, so that automatically gives everyone a 14-day login provided that the browser retains its cookies. See the caveat above.
I also modified the login code to stretch these "remembered" logins for students from 14 days to 60 days! That should cover the entire length of an eight-week Session. At least that's what I hope will happen!
NOTES
(1) Each browser (eg., Edge, AOL, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc) on each device (iPad, iPhone, Mac, Android, Windows, etc) needs its own login once, and the fix only applies to logins made after this announcement. So everyone with a current session will still have the cookie expire on its 48-hour clock one more time. The next time you log in, you should be able to stay for 60 days!
(2) The private browser tab/window and incognito mode caveat still applies.
